KY. lawmakers approve trial use of cannabis oil for treatment of seizures

Frankfort, KY- Senate Bill 124 allowing for the use of cannabis oil, to treat children with seizures has passed the state Senate after being passed 98-0 last week in the House. If the bill is not vetoed by Gov. Steve Beshear, it will become law in the coming weeks.
Rita Wooton, an advocate for the bill and whose child could benefit from the trial said “I feel like we’ve won the lottery. I never thought it would happen. I honestly didn’t.” She will be seeking cannabidiol treatments for her son Eli as soon as possible.
If the trials show promise, it's expected that further legislation concerning the use of medical marijuana could be on the horizon. Sen. Westerfield, a cosponsor of the bill said "I still harbor those reservations personally and professionally about the psychoactive properties of marijuana... But I’m not going to shut the door on the anything that opens our eyes to something new or something different that may be helpful,"
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. CBD's are believed to have a broader medical use than the psychoactive cannabinoid THC... tetrahydrocannabinol.
"Cannabis oil" should not be confused with "hemp oil". Hemp oil is derived from unscheduled industrial hemp, making it legal to sell on the internet or at the corner market. Cannabis oil for medicinal use is derived from the marijuana plant, making it a Schedule I substance under federal law.
